Sydney Dalton ‘Unifies’ Beliebers and Directioners, Becomes Common Target of Attack

Like us on Facebook

Loyal fans aggressively attacked Dalton for her infamous conduct, and some fans have gone as far as sending her death threats.  The teenager was eventually kicked out of Bieber Army, a strong Twitter group, and was trending since then on the networking site. But the shocker came when Dalton bragged about meeting Bitish-Irish band One Direction last year, thereby igniting fury (and jealousy?) among Directioners.

Though the two fan bases have something to agree upon as of now, yet it's quite likely that they may go back to fighting each other in the near future. here are some of the top tweets Beliebers and Directioners have posted on Twitter:

- Mark this in your calendar! Beliebers and Directioners are getting along! :) haha! never thought this day would come! :)

- dear Sydney Dalton, it's not jealousy. We just hate you. That's all. Sincerely, Beliebers and Directioners.

- Beliebers and Directioners aren't fighting anymore.. thank u Sydney Dalton.

- dear Sydney Dalton, we don't hate you because you're famous, you're famous because we hate you. Sincerely, Beliebers and Directioners.

- Loving the fact that Beliebers and Directioners are getting along :')

- dear Beliebers and Directioners, this is the start of a beautiful fandom relationship ;3 No more hating, just feel the love !

- The reason Beliebers and Directioners don't get along is because there is so much in common between both fanbases.

- Jesus christ some of the beliebers and directioners have more followers than some celebrities!!

- Beliebers and Directioners shouldn't fight. like, how can I fight with myself?

My audience with the Queen Mary

Party time en route to another port.

Shirley Sinclair

WE have become accustomed of late to pre-dinner mojitos and martinis in the refined surrounds of the Commodore Club.

but as it turns out, throwing back a couple of ice-cold ales and soft drinks under the yellow XXXX umbrellas in the Mandorah Beach Hotel beer garden is the most-fitting way a couple of Aussie "loyal subjects" could farewell royalty in the Northern Territory.

The waterfront hotel is several kilometres across Darwin Harbour from Fort Hill Wharf where RMS Queen Mary 2 has docked for the day on her first visit to the territory capital.

In reality, the picturesque little pub is a million miles from the opulent life onboard Cunard's 151,400-tonne flagship.

our six-night journey on the largest, most luxurious ocean liner to visit Down Under presented a procession of jaw-dropping moments and left us envying those undertaking her 22-day Royal Circumnavigation of Australia … and indeed the full 108-night world voyage.

A spur-of-the-moment decision to take the ferry across from Cullen Bay to visit the tiny Mandorah township results in unobstructed views of QM2, as she is affectionately called, in port at the distant wharf.

Just as she is about to leave, the zoom lenses work overtime to capture the traditional salute in honour of the 345m-long ocean liner's first visit to Darwin as a tugboat sprays two great arcs of water across the bow.

The publican and a couple of locals also are keen to see "Mary" in all her glory as she dwarfs Darwin CBD skyscrapers and passes straight in front of the humble hotel on her way to the next port of call in Bali.

Queen Mary 2's first Royal Circumnavigation of Australia pays homage to Matthew Flinders who was the first to sail the length and breadth of our shores from 1802 to 1803.

after the Indonesian sidestep, QM2 finally bid farewell to the Antipodes in Sydney last Thursday.

At that time, she will have visited eight Australian ports across five states and the Northern Territory (the longest time spent in a country outside her northern hemisphere home ports of Southampton and new York), as part of her fifth world voyage which left Southampton on January 10 and will return on April 27.

as we sit chatting to the friendly Mandorah folk and a Darwin friend, we have carte blanche to reminisce about our week.

we rave about the foodie heaven across a diverse range of restaurants including the Lotus Asian-inspired dining and the signature Todd English Restaurant, plus the first-class entertainment ranging from a string quartet and harpist to solo artists such as comedian juggler David DiMuzio and the amazing voices of headliners Phillip Browne and Lorraine Brown.

I want to close my eyes and imagine I'm reclining once again under the dome screen of Illuminations – the world's only floating planetarium – listening to Robert Redford narrate Cosmic Collisions or Harrison Ford detail the Search For Life in other galaxies as six projectors help bring patrons closer to space and its mysteries.

I want another scalp massage under the cascading waterfall or to loll in the bubbles of the whirlpool in the hydrotherapy pool before surrendering to the powerful thumbs of Canyon Ranch therapist and Brisbane resident Rachel Pole.

I want to be served once more by our knowledgeable waiter Arnold or to discus grape varieties with Croatian sommelier Christian in the Brittania Restaurant.

I want to plonk myself down on the plush red velvet lounges of the Royal Court Theatre as the turquoise "peacock-inspired" costumes of the Royal Cunard Singers and Dancers grace the stage in a tribute to the golden age of showbusiness, backed live by the theatre orchestra.

I want to be enveloped by the South Pacific Ball in the Queens Room and watch black and white tuxedos and sparkling formal gowns swirl across the dancefloor.

but perhaps what I really long to do is to lean back on the sunchair, feet up on the coffee table of starboard-side Deluxe Balcony Stateroom 8001, and do absolutely nothing but stare into the vast expanse of ocean on a balmy afternoon in the tropics – one of the few times you realise you are moving on the water.

During our six full days, we also snorkelled Manta Ray Bay off Hook Island and lazed on Black Beach in the Whitsundays (while anchored off Airlie Beach) and explored Kuranda and the rainforest (after anchoring off Yorkeys Knob).

but one of the highlights of the sea days would have to be late afternoon on February 20.

Joining dozens of keen photographers and others with binoculars, I shared the excitement of sailing past Australia's most northerly point at Cape York and seeing the wind turbines atop the Thursday Island township before rounding Hammond Rock on an ever-so-cautious westerly passage through treacherous Torres Strait.

and if that wasn't enough of the wow factor, the sight of two distant ships sailing into the golden sunset was the image that stayed with us as we went on our separate ways to dress for our semi-formal night at sea.

Queen Mary 2 stands head and shoulders above other ocean liners as the longest, tallest, widest and most comfortable at sea. but her attention to detail is her forte.

Particularly after completing her extensive refurbishment last December, she certainly lives up to the superlatives afforded the grandest, most famous ocean liner afloat today.

and her daily programs featuring activities such as ballroom dancing classes, art exhibitions and lectures on myriad topics echo the traditions and romance of the golden age of cruising when passengers liked to stroll the decks, partake of afternoon tea and dress in black-tie for dinner.

Mary can't help but sail into the hearts of all those who come to know her intimately.

So, while our Mandorah Beach toast may have been on a beer budget, it came with champagne gratitude for a memorable voyage.

QM2 calls Down Under next year to Australian ports including Brisbane and Sydney as part of the 106-night world voyage from Southampton on January 10. Thisl includes her historic maiden 12-night circumnavigation of new Zealand Visit Cunardline or call 13 24 41.

QUEEN MARY 2's vital statistics

Tonnage: 151,400 tonnes – almost twice the size of the original Queen Mary, which was completed in 1936, and more than double the size of the legendary QE2.

Length: 345m – the longest liner in the world. she is more than double the length of the Gabba cricket ground and more than two-thirds the length of Brisbane's Story Bridge spanning from Kangaroo Point to the Valley

Maximum speed: 30 knots or 55kmh

Capacity: 2620 guests plus 1253 crew

Number of staterooms: 1310 – 75 per cent (955) featuring private balconies – covering 10 different stateroom types

Number of decks: 14

Sailing right around the globe

Imagine experiencing the wonders of the world without ever setting foot on a plane. when it comes to a complete travel experience, little compares to a circumnavigation of the globe. And sailing the seven seas on an elegant ship brings back all the romance and excitement of yesteryear’s explorers. P&O Cruises makes it possible to

do this in supreme style, on board sophisticated Aurora. It’s an incredible journey, beginning in January 2013, which takes in a kaleidoscope of famous cities, beautiful landscapes and man-made wonders.

This 105-night world cruise passes through two of the greatest feats of maritime engineering – the Suez and Panama canals — and calls at 40 ports, including leisurely overnight stops at Hong Kong, Dubai and San Francisco.

After Aurora sails from Southampton, its first stop is Ponta Delgada in the volcanic Azores. the adventure continues with a transatlantic crossing to the sun- soaked Caribbean islands of Barbados, St Lucia and Curacao and a gentle introduction to the joys of life at sea.

Aurora is a sophisticated ship with three pools, a gorgeous spa, a bistro created by Marco Pierre White and

plenty of lounges in which to while away the evening. you can also make the most of the balmy Caribbean nights by eating at the al fresco grill.

While your days at sea pass in a relaxed haze, the excursions offered at each destination are an exciting cocktail of colourful cultures, iconic architecture, unforgettable scenery and rewarding activities.

Aurora sails through the world- famous Panama Canal to Mexico’s eco- tourism hub Huatulco, before calling at the party town of Acapulco. then, clam chowder replaces beach cocktails as the ship reaches the west coast of the USA for an overnight stay at San Francisco. after sailing beneath the Golden Gate Bridge, you’ll be ready to visit Alcatraz and ride the photogenic cable cars.

You only have to unpack once, so it’s easy enough to pull out your beachwear again for Honolulu and Hilo, the two exciting stops in verdant Hawaii.

At the picture-perfect French Polynesian islands of Bora Bora and Tahiti, you could choose to float in a blue lagoon, explore the volcanic atolls or learn more about the fascinating culture of these South Pacific islands.

Just over a month into your adventure, you’ll reach new Zealand in time for its summer. There’s the “City of Sails”, Auckland, the art deco delight of Napier and the cultural hotspot of Wellington to explore — along with some great wine and truly unforgettable scenery.

Next on this epic cruise is Australia. Aurora spends a full day and evening in Sydney, where the marvellous Harbour Bridge and Opera House are must-sees. Vibrant Brisbane and Cairns — a gateway to the stunning Great Barrier Reef — complete the antipodean sector of the cruise before it’s time to head towards Asia, via the exotic nation of Papua new Guinea.

The itinerary takes in some of the most glorious sights across the great continent. Japan is a special place, from the neon streets of Osaka to the serene temples of Kyoto and poignant city of Nagasaki. then Aurora sails to China, with excursions to the Great Wall, Beijing’s elegant Summer Palace and the immense Tiananmen Square.

A full day and evening in the “Pearl of the Orient” Shanghai follows, checking out the tea gardens and ornate temples, before an overnight stay in the buzzing metropolis of Hong Kong.

There’s plenty of fun in the Far East at the Vietnamese beach destination of Nha Trang. also on the list are a visit to Thailand’s popular island, Ko Samui; the chance to explore Ho Chi Minh City; the vivid delights of Bangkok and the soaring towers of Singapore – an unmissable glimpse of the Asia of the future.

EXOTIC INDIA AND ARABIA

Later, in colourful Mumbai in India, passengers can bargain for wares at the fragrant bazaars — or wait for some eastern promise in the souks in Oman’s atmospheric capital Muscat. Another overnight stop in glittering Dubai gives a chance to view the world’s tallest building and relax on the beaches.

As well as a trip along the Suez Canal, Egypt is stuffed with wonders that can be visited on optional land tours, including the Valley of the Kings and the Pyramids at Giza.

After all this heady culture, there’s a chance to relax at the Cypriot holiday resort of Limassol. But the journey is far from over and there are plenty of inspirational experiences still to come. Aurora enters the Holy Land at Haifa in Israel and there are superb sightseeing stops at Rome and Lisbon on the way home to Southampton.

Congratulations — you’ve been around the world in 106 days and will no doubt have a indelible sense of achievement and satisfaction.

Phileas Fogg would be proud.

The 106-night Aurora World Circumnavigation departs Southampton on January 7, 2013. Fares from £9,999pp including £220pp on-board credit.

This cruise takes in these regions: ?The Azores ?Caribbean ?Central America ?USA inc. Hawaii ?South Pacific ?Australasia ?South-east Asia ?India ?Middle East ?Europe

Sydney Anarchist Vandals salute Lambros Foundas

From Sydney Indymedia

In the early hours of the 10th of March, exactly two years since Lambros Foundas was gunned down by uniformed pigs in the street of Athens, some anarchist vandals targeted the Marrickville branch of the Beirut Hellenic Bank.

We sprayed “BURN BANKS” “FOR LAMBROS” “FOR SOCIAL REVOLUTION” on the windows of the bank, put superglue in the ATM card slots and covered the screens with paint.

This minor act of sabotage was carried out in memory of Lambros, an anarchist, social fighter and member of Revolutionary Struggle. he lived with the courage and conviction to translate his anti-authoritarian beliefs into action and he died on his feet, for that we will never forget him.

Eternal Honour to Lambros Foundas, Solidarity with the Revolutinary Struggle and Immediate Freedom for Pola Roupa, Nikos Maziotis and Kostas Gournas.

For generalized attacks on all machinery of capital and the state!

Alan Jones plays his cards right

CBD

Upping the ante … Alan Jones provides James Packer with a bit of spin. Illustration: John Shakespeare

The radio broadcaster who extolled the magnificence of the rejuvenated Walsh Bay precinct in the late 1990s (which happened to be redeveloped by one of his sponsors), has maintained his strong interest in the appearance of the western part of the Sydney Harbour.

The 2GB announcer Alan Jones yesterday gave James Packer no reprieve when he heaped praise on the casino mogul’s plans to build a ”10 star” gambling den in the Barangaroo redevelopment next to Walsh Bay.

”You have only had to see the impact that Melbourne’s Crown complex has had on a precinct that was virtually a pigsty until Lloyd Williams and now James Packer have come along,” Jones explained before he even got around to asking the Crown chairman any questions.

Advertisement: story continues below

”It was a derelict slum, Southbank,” Jones told his listeners, expressing regret that Melbourne now had a better tourist attraction than Sydney.

”What Sydney needs now is a big visionary iconic structure – and I’ve argued about that for years – and James Packer has conceived such a development,” Jones said of the city that has a few little-known landmarks such as the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

When Jones finally got around to asking some questions (aka comments), he did manage to get a chuckle out of Packer.

”I can see [Sydney lord mayor] Clover Moore sort of riding her bike in your direction,” Jones said to Packer’s and his own guffaws. ”Ride a bike in your … oh dear, dear, dear,” said Jones, who cemented his radio career at 2UE in the 1980s when it was owned by Kerry Packer (James’s father).

PLACE YOUR BETS

But Jones has not always been a fan of casino developments. The radio announcer railed against the Leighton-led venture that won the tender to operate Sydney’s first casino (now called the Star) in the early 1990s. This was around the time a consortium led by Kerry Packer’s Consolidated Press Holdings lost out on the tender.

Jones appears to have softened his stance against the Leighton-built structure. He has recently been starring as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the musical Annie at Lyric Theatre at the Star (aka Pyrmont Leagues Club).

James Packer does not appear to be much of an early morning news junkie either.

Despite multiple media reports early yesterday that NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell liked his Barangaroo casino idea, the billionaire only appeared to find this out when he was on Jones’s program. ”Well that’s so exciting,” Packer said when told about the Premier’s support for his idea.

FILL IT UP

There was one number in the Caltex annual accounts yesterday that might be trawled back up if the refiner makes any decision later to close its Kurnell refinery in Sydney.

Not the refiner’s $714 million full-year loss. But rather the annual remuneration of its chief executive, Julian Segal. Despite a ”poor 2011 refining performance” and a $1.5 billion write-down on Kurnell, Segal’s remuneration proved resilient.

Despite taking a dent to his short-term cash bonus, which fell from $1 million to $718,000, Segal’s total remuneration still rose from $4.1 million to $4.56 million. This was thanks to his long-term share-based incentives rising 57 per cent to $1.87 million. His base pay rose 3 per cent to $1.87 million.

HEGARTY TO HELP

The mining figure made famous for his controversial $8.4 million farewell package from Oxiana (before its disastrous merger with Zinifex to form OZ Minerals), Owen Hegarty, has been given the challenge to help turn things around at the explorer Tigers Realm Coal.

Tigers Realm, which listed last August at 50¢, closed at an unimpressive 34.5¢ yesterday. But in a notice of meeting lodged yesterday, the company is seeking shareholder approval for Hegarty (as a non-executive director) to get 1 million options that will have an exercise price of 75¢ each and will vest after 12 months from issue.

NOT SO GOOD

There’s no way to polish this one. last year’s dog private equity float, Collins Foods, confirmed yesterday that things were just as bad as we thought, and earnings would ”not vary materially from the bottom of the guidance range”.

That’s a minor victory for the KFC and Sizzler restaurant operator, which normally likes to surprise on the downside. last November, just three months after the listing, it confessed it would actually make a statutory loss. Earnings for the year would be as much as 27 per cent down on prospectus, it said. The stock crashed 40 per cent and has never recovered.

In a staff memo last week, Collins’s chief executive, Kevin Perkins, admitted the company had committed a ”cardinal sin” by downgrading its first profit results, conceded the company was in ”crisis management mode” and exhorted staff to cut costs to help make guidance.

”Nothing is too small,” he said. ”Look at items like unnecessary photocopying, double-sided documents, limit colour copying, turn off lights, don’t waste stationery, etc. Think twice and spend once.”

It might be interesting how staff on the KFC front line could also help. maybe they could ask customers to upsize their family chicken bucket feeds. could they cut back on the size of their drumsticks?

Can Crystal shine again? The comedian hosts the Oscars for the 9th time

February 26, 2012 12:00 am By Barbara Vancheri / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The world is a tough room, Billy Crystal said the last time he hosted the Oscars.

“A billion people are watching you, and to keep the balance of the evening moving, you have to hopefully be witty, hopefully be spontaneous if something happens and get out of the way of the show after a while. It's a big job and a hard one.”

And he should know, with tonight marking his ninth stint as Oscar host.

It will be the first with Twitter and Facebook providing instant feedback and potentially snarky criticism, some best picture candidates that are more art house favorites than “Lord of the Rings” or “Titanic” hits, and expectations of a return to his glory days.

Mr. Crystal, 63, has to aim for funny, topical, edgy (without being mean-spirited) and yet warm up the nerve-jangled audience in the theater and millions watching.

PG VIDEO

His baptism came in March 1990 after Gilbert Cates was hired to produce the show and make everyone forget the 1989 broadcast that opened with the now-infamous Rob Lowe-Snow White “Proud Mary” duet. Seventeen Hollywood luminaries, including Billy Wilder, Paul Newman and Gregory Peck, issued a public letter calling that effort an “embarrassment” and “demeaning” to the industry.

Mr. Cates, who had a reputation for old-fashioned, tasteful work, turned to Mr. Crystal, who earned one Emmy and two nominations for hosting the Grammys.

The pair collaborated periodically through the years, and neither was scheduled for the 84th Academy Awards when Mr. Cates died on Halloween, producer Brett Ratner withdrew from the job after making some lewd, offensive comments and scheduled host Eddie Murphy walked in turn.

Enter producer Brian Grazer and Mr. Crystal, as if riding to the rescue on horseback, as he famously did years ago on the show. Mr. Cates, after all, once said the comedian “plays the unexpected events of the live telecast like a Stradivarius.” So here's hoping for the unexpected.

As he prepares to take the stage of the Hollywood and Highland Center in Hollywood tonight at 8:30, a look back at how he did through the years.

March 26, 1990

The challenge: to build on his Grammy hosting success and the goodwill generated by a brief appearance on the 1989 Oscars, prove his humor wasn't “too ethnic for Middle America” (a fear relayed to Mr. Cates and reported in Steve Pond's “The Big Show” book) and make everyone forget the 1989 duet that made Disney blow a fuse.

That was the year: “Driving miss Daisy” was named best picture and the acting prizes went to Jessica Tandy as miss Daisy, Daniel Day-Lewis and Brenda Fricker for “My Left Foot” and Denzel Washington, “Glory.” The show had a decidedly international flavor with crews stationed in London, Moscow, Sydney, Tokyo and Buenos Aires.
