Are you looking for a unique adventure full of world-class events, exquisite dining, and a myriad of attractions, both natural and man-made? Sydney appears to have it all. the capital of New South Wales, Sydney is the most varied of all Australian States and one of the world’s top travel destinations with something for everyone. Be close to wilderness, koalas and kangaroos! Climb to the top of the Harbor Bridge for 360° city views! Explore the breathtaking and mysterious Blue Mountains – a region of spectacular rock formations, deep, tree-lined valleys and waterfalls! This and much more is waiting for you in this paradise getaway always heaving with life.
Start your day early to make your Sydney vacation last longer and more varied. Visit first Sydney Opera House, the city’s premier attraction, representing a complex of theaters and halls. But what draws the attention of many visitors more is undoubtedly, its splendid, imaginative design (with a roof evocative of a ship at full sail), which is considered a wonder of the modern world. Situated on Sydney Harbor at Bennelong Point, the Opera House is home to the Australian Ballet, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Ensemble Theatre, Musica Viva Australia, Sydney Dance Company, Opera Australia, Sydney Symphony and Sydney Theatre Company.
Sydney Opera House is also where you’ll find four restaurants, six bars and numerous souvenir shops. being close to all types of accommodation, the Sydney Opera House is an ideal base for exploring the city’s bountiful attractions.
Within walking distance from Sydney Opera House, The Rocks district is a must for visitors to Australia. Often described as ‘Sydney’s outdoors museum,’ the Rocks is the oldest area of the city that has recently undergone an amazing metamorphosis, the old district being transformed into a vibrant spot thriving with five-star hotels and a horde of restaurants, pubs, shops, weekend markets, galleries and museums. Activities in the Rocks mainly center around walking, looking and eating.
In the Rocks District do not miss out the stunning Sydney Observatory – one of the most significant sites in the nation’s scientific history, offering dramatic views across Sydney Harbor; the Rocks Discovery Museum, a free, family-friendly venue, showcasing the story of the Rocks area of Sydney from pre-European days to the present; the Sydney Harbor Bridge, the world’s largest (but not longest) steel arch bridge and the highest viewing point in Sydney, offering a truly wondrous experience.
Bondi Beach is another popular attraction in Sydney that is regarded as one of the most sought after suburbs in Australia with backpackers, board riders and billionaires in search of a slower sun warmed world that somehow stands a little apart from busy lives. the name ‘Bondi’ is an aboriginal onomatopoeic word meaning water breaking over the rocks or noise of water breaking over rocks. Surfing in this modern and trendy coastal resort is an absolute must. But if you do not feel like tackling the waves, Bondi offers enclosed swimming baths at its southern end.
If you are visiting Sydney with your family, one of the best places is the Taronga Park Zoo, best-known for its vast array of exotic and local animals, reptiles and birds in a spectacular setting. Taronga Zoo offers a truly fun filled experience for young and old. the zoo is open daily, from 9 am to 5 pm.

Life in a big city
Posted by Malcolm in Uncategorized on November 15, 2011
This just in from the files of the glaring obvious: Sydney is big.
Wikipedia informs me that “Sydney, Australia is located in a coastal basin bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east, the Blue Mountains to the west, the Hawkesbury River to the north and the Woronora Plateau to the south.”
That means that Sydney extends for 1580 square kilometres, which makes it roughly the same size as London – though the London urban area’s population of almost eight million is close to double that of Sydney.
What this boils down to is life here is very different from life in Wellington, where I spent much of my adult life. in contrast to Sydney, Wellington is a minnow – the city takes up a mere 290 sq km and boasts a population of fewer than 200,000.
Moving to Sydney required many adjustments. I imagine my culture shock would be common to anyone moving from a small city to a larger one, whether that larger city is the size of Sydney or just bigger than what you were accustomed to.
In my early days in Sydney, I was constantly underestimating how long it would take me to get places. It took a while to get to grips with the the notion that going anywhere outside the CBD would require at least two forms of public transport – a choose your own adventure of buses, trains and ferries.
But I’m grateful for the public transport. I look at the volume of traffic and feel overwhelmed at the idea of driving. Cycling to work seems out of the question. Braver people than me seem happy to fight for space in the bus lane but I am not.
To get to work, I spend the better part of 25 minutes strap-hanging on one of the many express buses. well, pole-hanging is probably a more accurate description. Sydney does share its bus driving style with Wellington: if you’re standing in the aisle, a firm grip on something solid is advisable.
However, it can be a fight to get that spot in the aisle. There’s little room for politeness when getting on the express bus in rush hour, unless you want to risk having to wait for the next bus, which may be already full and sail serenely past your stop.
The time it takes to commute makes the working day seem much longer and more tiring, but salaries here are much higher and make it worthwhile.
And of course, because of that population of four million, there are people everywhere. And hence queues – at the supermarket, bank or post office, to get your lunch at Subway. Pavement rage is an exercise in futility in Pitt St mall or any of the CBD streets at rush hour. It’s much better to relax and go with it, even if you’re stuck behind an ambling tourist.
If I thought Lambton Quay coming up to Christmas was a nightmare, I’m told I should prepare for a horror movie in Pitt St, where I work.
But with size comes the gift of choice. Want to go to the beach? in Wellington, I tended to frequent Oriental Bay and Scorching Bay. here, there are more stunning beaches than you can shake a stick at – I live a 20-minute walk from one and it’s a mere hop, skip and a jump to three more. you can choose your shopping area depending on your mood, be it malls, markets or high-end designer.
I’d be interested to hear if other people have experiences to share after moving from small to large – or perhaps in reverse, from large to small. Does the idea of living in a larger city appeal to you? Or perhaps a small town, if you live in the city?
» Join Are We there Yet on Facebook.
If you’re going to look at the population of Wellington City as opposed to the Wellington Urban Area (pop. 389,700) then surely you should be comparing with the City of Sydney, pop. 182,226 at last census and area of 25sq.km, ergo Wellington is both more populous and larger than Sydney but with a much lower population density. Shocking, I know, cheers.
I visited my brother-in-law in Sydney about 5 years ago and I too was astouned how long it to to go…well, anywhere. He thought nothing of a 45 minute drive (on a Sunday) into the CBD. Fortunately there was no real reason to go in there other than for site-seeing (and the new Years Eve fireworks, natch) with Castle Hill only a few km away.
The killer for me though was the flying cockroaches. at least here in Hawkes Bay you only have to anticipate in two dimensions when trying to squash them. My wife also finally found somewhere that was "too hot" – 45 degrees with zero wind really hurts.

Sydney Australia Climate
Posted by Malcolm in Uncategorized on September 16, 2011
One of the most important questions visitors like to know when planning their trip to Sydney Australia is what will the weather be like? of course predicting the weather anywhere in the world is akin to picking the winner of a horse race. However statistics do help to make a vacation easier by discarding none essential clothing and selecting what is appropriate.
The following monthly statistics Climate statistics will assist in your preparation.
JANUARY – 26.4
FEBRUARY – 26.3
MARCH – 25.2
APRIL – 22.9
MAY – 20.0
JUN – 17.5
JUL – 16.9
AUGUST – 18.2
SEPTEMBER – 20.4
OCTOBER – 22.5
NOVEMBER – 24.0
DECEMBER – 25.7
Remember that these statistics are average temperatures and there can be quite big shifts either way. also if you are planning to travel further out from Sydney to places such as the Blue Mountains, you can expect dramatic changes in conditions and temperatures. during late fall and in winter snow in the region can be quite heavy and during summer the high altitude makes it hotter.
You will find that the around the coastline near Sydney there is localized rainfall at times, although not usually heavy there are infrequent deluges that produce flooding. One very server storm a few years back produced hail storms the size of tennis balls right across greater Sydney that caused tens of millions dollars worth of damage to shattered roofs, windows, cars and property in general.
Sydney also has its fair share of lightening storms throughout the year which although spectaculars can also reek havoc to the city. at the other end of the scale summer months can produce periods of excessive heat and it is only very recently that the dams around Sydney have filled to a point where the population can stop worrying about the effects of a prolonged draught on the cities water supply.
Of course these weather patterns are the extreme and unusual. most of the time Sydney is one place in the world where visitors can relax in beautiful sunshine (even in winter). the best advice I can give to anyone planning a trip to Australia is to visit the Australian Weather bureau site: http://www.bom.gov.au prior to departure and research past weather trends for the intended time of travel as well as their forecast for the period.
If you decide that Sydney is the place for your next vacation destination I hope the weather is as kind as the people here are friendly.
