Queen Mary sails into Sydney

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 » 09:47am

The Queen Mary II has sailed into Sydney Harbour this morning.

Adorned with giant red lovehearts, the Queen Mary 2 is docking at Garden Island for Valentines Day.

She’s currently completing her first ever circumnavigation of the country, with nearly 2 and a half thousand passengers on board.

At 345 metres long, the luxury cruise liner is two thirds the length of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, too large to dock at Sydney’s Circular Quay.

It’s the second stop for guests travelling on the cruise liner, having arrived in Fremantle from Cape Town last week.

Usually based in new York, her Australian visit will be the longest time the ship has spent in one country.

Onboard the ship is an historic document, the journal of Captain Matthew Flinders from his Australian circumnavigation in 1814.

The liner is spending 28 days sailing Australian waters, and her next stop is Brisbane, then Cairns, Darwin, then back to Freemantle.

Sydney Kings players desperate to save Ian 'Moose' Robilliard

under pressure: Sydney Kings coach Ian Robilliard speaks to players. Picture: Mark Evans Source: The Daily Telegraph

SYDNEY Kings players are desperate to save coach Ian Robilliard from facing the axe and insist they are "100 per cent" behind him.

Captain Julian Khazzouh and point guard Aaron Bruce said the squad were playing for their coach and are using the pressure he is under as fuel heading into their rematch against Cairns at the Sydney Entertainment Centre tomorrow.

The pressure on the Kings mentor has subsided somewhat with team committee chairman Max Schroder saying Robilliard’s position was not discussed when the committee met on Tuesday following the club’s improved form on the weekend, when they won against the Tigers in Melbourne and pushed the Wildcats in Perth.

But Schroder, who owns a major share in the club, said he could not guarantee Robilliard would stay at the helm for the entire season.

Khazzouh said the players came together in a huddle moments before their games against Melbourne and Perth to talk about how much their coach means to them.

"we said it had to be a huge weekend for us," Khazzouh said. "there was speculation about jobs and a lot of pressure on our guys. we put everything in for it. we said we have to do this for Moose. "we have to show all the work he does with us is paying off."

The star centre believes the club took a giant step over the weekend – but understands with their season 4-6 after 10 games, there is still pressure to climb into the top four on the NBL ladder.

Bruce said players will fight for their coach.

"we still have a lot of faith in Moose," Bruce said. "He has my 100 per cent support."

Cyclone Yasi to hit Australia

Cyclone Yasi is the strongest storm to threaten Australia in living memory, but the country has long record of powerful cyclones causing death and destruction.only Australia’s relatively sparse population along much of its northern coastline has limited the damage in the past. but booming mining communities, ports, agriculture and tourism businesses mean more property in the path of storms. Scientists say Yasi’s size and strength is being fed by historically high sea surface temperatures that are providing fuel and moisture to power the storm. Australian officials have urged residents in parts of Queensland to evacuate with their loved ones before Cyclone Yasi strikes. Officials say the category five storm is expected to be the largest to ever hit the continent. last month, Queensland was hit by widespread deadly flooding. Yasi is currently 555km east of Cairns and 560km northeast of Townsville. it has winds of up to 295 km/h at its centre.
