Sydney Harbour Cruise « Travelrat's Travels

Sydney Harbour 3rd Dec 2007

We met ‘Captain Cook’ on the Circular Quay at Sydney … or, rather, a re-enactor, advertising ‘Captain Cook Cruises’, who were offering a harbour cruise. now, we know Captain Cook Cruises; we sailed on their ‘Murray Princess’ paddle-boat on a river cruise on the Murray last year. (Video of this at http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=9ygF0dI7Eko ) and, I’ve long been an admirer of James Cook anyway. his is one of my favourite ‘farm boy makes good’ stories.

I had a word with him, and he turned out to have a good knowledge of Cook’s life and times, and was particularly interested that I’d visited ‘Cook Country’, around Middlesborough and Whitby.

We took the morning ‘Coffee Cruise’, in which a sail around the harbour was combined with ‘coffee-time’, in which coffee, muffins and Anzac Biscuits were served.

The guide pointed out where the ‘great and the good’ lived, and, usually, how much they paid for the place, making a sound a bit like the Hollywood Tour. She also pointed out where the nudist beaches were, and explained why most of them were so close to Naval facilities. (It’s a long story, and I might tell it sometime, if you have the patience!)

Of course, she gave facts and figures about the Harbour Bridge (I didn’t know the Anzac cap-badge is supposed to have inspired its design) and the Opera House. but, there are also several tranquil, unspoilt places within the Bay, which is hardly surprising … it is the biggest natural harbour in the world.

‘Captain Cook Cruises’ don’t only offer harbour and river cruises; have a look at their website at www.captaincook.com.au for their full range. and, they don’t copy Captain Cook who, after leaving Botany Bay, discovered the great Barrier Reef the hard way, when Endeavour ran aground on it!

Captain sad to set sail

Captain Trevor Haworth and his wife mrs Haworth welcome seaLink to take the company forward Sealink Chairman mr Ursini, Captain Cook Cruises Captain Trevor Haworth and chief executive officer and managing director Jeff Ellison congratulate each other on the sale.

Founder Captain Trevor Haworth expressed his sadness at yesterday?s sale of Captain Cook Cruises but sees a brighter future for the cruise line in the horizon.

?It?s a sad time for us,” Captain Haworth said.

“We have spent 41 years on [Sydney] Harbour. on the one hand it is sad and on the other it is good for the future development of the company.?

?Our company is world renowned for its lunch time cruise which is a wonderful way for international visitors to see our Harbour.

?Times change and the family business knows that Captain Cook Cruises needs to expand.?

Captain Haworth said the huge contribution by over 300 staff members shaped the company and now is important to the future development of the business.

?It was very important to our family to choose an Australian company, we needed to know the business is going to good hands,? mr Haworth said.

?We are very pleased to welcome onboard SeaLink of South Australia to take this company forward.?

SeaLink Travel Group chairman mr Giuliano Ursini said the acquisition was perfectly aligned to their national and international growth strategy and vision of ?connecting Australasian icons and landscapes to the world?.

?It?s a great privilege to take part in this wonderful union,? mr Ursini said.

Mr Ursini said reasons behind the purchase were attributed to adding to SeaLink?s growing portfolio providing additional security to staff.

On the issue of staff, mr Ursini said SeaLink has offered all Captain Cook staff the opportunity to retain positions within the company adding that he hoped they would.

?We will go from around 450 people to 800 people it?s a very important part of the operation that we have the right people at the end of the day any business gets down to the human resources as its most important asset,? he said.

Mr Ursini also revealed the sale was a mutual decision between the two companies largely based on equal respect for the brand created by Captain and mrs Haworth.

Tourism & Transport Forum Chief Executive John Lee said the arrival of SeaLink operations strengthens the placement of Sydney Harbour as a leading international attraction, and provides the SeaLink group opportunity to promote its services in Adelaide, Kangaroo Island, Townsville and along the Murray River to Sydney?s prime tourist market.

?Often one of the first things visitors do is take a Sydney Harbour cruise, so this offers a chance to show off some of Australia?s other coastal attractions,? mr Lee said.

Syd ferries closer to being franchised

Syd ferries closer to being franchised

Sydney Ferries are one step closer to becoming a private franchise with five companies putting their hands up to take over staff and safety responsibilities on the fleet.

The NSW government is franchising out the running of the iconic transport service under a model that would see it retain ownership of the ferries and control over fare structures, routes and services.

On Friday, the Expression of interest (EOI) process closed, with Harbour City Ferries, HarbourConnect, SeaLink Travel Group, Serco Australia and Transit Systems making submissions.

The NSW Government will review the submissions and create a shortlist of companies.

These would then be involved in a tender process later in the year, Minister for Transport Gladys Berejiklian said.

‘Submissions will be evaluated against a number of criteria including the respondents’ safety record and operational experience, as well as their experience in improving services for customers,’ Ms Berejiklian said in a statement.

Ms Berejiklian said the franchise contract would include staff and safety obligations.

In early June, 28 companies, ranging from pleasure cruise company Captain Cook Cruises to the Commonwealth Bank, had registered their initial interest in running the service.

The EOI stage is a more formal and detailed process.

More than just fun and games at Fijian school

  • DESTINATION AFLOATMAKING a DIFFERENCE

ON a secluded island in the South Pacific, a little Fijian boy is belting out the latest Justin Bieber hit.

"Baby, baby, baby," he croons, cocking his head dramatically and flashing a grin at the cruise ship passengers who have alighted from their transfer boat and wandered into his village.

The visitors are bemused by this unexpected display of pop culture on the tiny island of Wayasewa, cushioned within the deep turquoise waters of the Yasawa archipelago off the main Fijian island of Viti Levu.

But isolation is no barrier to progress for the Justin Bieber impersonator and his friends, all of whom are students at the island’s Namara Village School. Despite their reliance on an erratic generator and their severely limited access to fresh water, the 81 students here are already accomplished. they recite verses in perfect English, find visitors’ countries and home cities on a world map and tend their school’s facilities with unrestrained pride.

"at 3pm one of the kids will get the task of beating the lali [Fijian drum] and that’s the call to chores," says headmaster Jope Leano. Litter is disposed of, libraries are tidied, toilets are scrubbed. The scene is of particular significance for one visitor, the managing director of Captain Cook Cruises, Jackie Charlton.

For the past nine years Charlton’s Sydney-based company has partnered with schools from the villages included on its Fijian itineraries, either funding projects directly or entering into joint ventures with the locals. both models are supplemented with contributions from cruise passengers.

Hundreds of projects have been completed: the construction of libraries, dormitories and classrooms, the provision of water tanks, stationery, books and computers. And after all-too-frequent cyclones, damaged generators, buildings and water tanks have been repaired with materials brought in on Captain Cook’s ship, the MV Reef Endeavour.

"The reward of seeing the schools we have helped build and knowing the children now have the resources to do well is one of the benefits of becoming socially involved," Charlton says.

But community wellbeing is dependent on more than just schooling, and the company provides a conduit for passengers who wish to lend a hand to the people they encounter on their travels. Recently they contributed to Captain Cook’s fundraising drive for a boy who needed to travel to the US for surgery.

"we found that people wanted to do [something helpful],"Charlton says. "I think people have a more philanthropic outlook now. Mass media has helped with that"

Clearly, the media has also helped the children, drawing them into the global village and inspiring them to emulate more than just the lyrics of a Justin Bieber tune: after Year 8, eager students sit a test that determines whether they can go to high school on the mainland.

Captain Cook Cruises breached hygiene laws

AAP

A popular Sydney Harbour cruise boat operator has been fined for breaching food hygiene laws during a safety operation, the NSW government says.

Captain Cook Cruises was issued with three penalty notices after failing to maintain the required standard of cleanliness, failing to keep clean fixtures, fittings and equipment, and failing to keep in a good state of repair and working order food premises, fixtures, fittings and equipment.

Each penalty notice carries a $880 fine.

"just because you’re on the water doesn’t mean you’re out of reach of food safety laws," said NSW Primary Industries Minister Steve Whan.

A number of government agencies, including the NSW Food Authority, detected the breaches during an operation that was part of Hassle Free Nights.

Hassle Free Nights is designed to tackle alcohol-related crime and anti-social drunken behaviour in Sydney’s main entertainment districts.

In addition to NSW Police, the operation included Food Authority officers who inspected boats’ food preparation areas.

"(They) have wide-ranging powers of investigation and enforcement to help ensure (people) can eat safely in NSW wherever they are," mr Whan said.

Several further penalty notices, issued to other Sydney harbour cruise boat operators, were expected to be finalised in coming weeks, the minister added.

Best sydney harbour cruise for a tourist?

In my opinion, if you bypass the tourist cruises & make use of the Sydney ferries & rivercat, you'll get value for your money.

http://www.sydneyferries.info/home.htm

My top pick – the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly is a must-do & provides you with great scenery.

If you're after cruises in particular, Captain Cook Cruises are the best. they have many to choose from, day or night, buffet or set menu, etc. they last for a few hours and although they are more expensive than a ferry, etc, they are a good experience.

Here's the link.
