Celtic Colours organizers ‘really happy’ with this year’s event

SYDNEY — an organizer of the Celtic Colours International Festival was calling the 15th edition of the nine-day musical blitz a success even though final numbers on attendance weren’t available yet.
Celtic Colours artistic director Joella Foulds has received compliments on how smoothly the event was organized considering there were approximately 400 onstage performers.
“I don’t have any final numbers at this point but every indication is that the (audience) numbers were up, and that the people were really enjoying themselves,” she said Sunday.
“We got all kinds of great feedback about the quality of the events, the artistic strength of the festival, so we’re really happy.”
The finale show on Saturday, the Barra MacNeils’ Celtic Roots & Branches at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion in Sydney, was sold out.
There was also one final installment for the festival club at the Gaelic College in St. Anns on Saturday night, where performers got to relax, let their hair down and performed in a casual atmosphere into the wee hours of the morning.
With the dozens of shows, hundreds of cultural events and thousands of music fans soaking it all in, Celtic Colours isn’t considered “just another gig,” Foulds said.
“If this festival became just another gig then there would be no reason for them to do what they do, which is go all over the world and tell people how great the festival is.
“They are our best ambassadors because they have such a positive experience. they don’t just give out, they get a lot back from the people and experiences we provide for them.”
The festival is world renowned in Celtic music circles, but also in the folk genre, she said.
Planning for next year’s festival begins shortly because audiences are “pretty discerning” on quality and know the high level of performance needed next year to keep people coming back for more, Foulds said.

Right Some Good a foodie adventure

The right Some Good culinary and entertainment festival continues today with a lobster feast by chef Jill Davie and a Big Fiddle Kitchen Party at the Joan Harriss Cruise Pavilion.
Local pop-rock musician Carleton Stone will also be launching his new album at the event beginning at 7 p.m., with doors to open at 6:45 p.m.
“So far we’ve had seven different countries represented, (Thursday) being our seventh with France,” said event founder Pearleen Mofford. “They’ve worked with incredible products that I know they’re just so pleased and excited about.”
Right Some Good began Aug. 25, in Judique, with dinner by chef Alvin Leung of Hong Kong and a performance by the Colin Grant Band.
Mofford said to date the festival has drawn tourists from as far away as Hong Kong, China, Ontario and Washington, D.C.
“It’s been really exciting to talk to the dinner guests every night about ingredients that they’ve never eaten before, that they didn’t even know came from the island. So it’s been more than an adventure for people here as well, they’ve pushed their own personal boundaries in trying things like ox tail and eel and absolutely loving it.
“We served eel in Judique and not one piece came back. There was 120 people who enjoyed it immensely. That’s what this is about, is encouraging people to push their own personal food boundaries.”
Mofford said she’s hoping to make right Some Good a signature event for the island each year.
The festival continues Saturday with a dinner by chef Robert Clark on the 19th hole at the Lakes Golf Club in Ben Eoin. Entertainment will be provided by Carmen Townsend.
On Sunday, the Fortress of Louisbourg will be serving cuisine by candlelight by a world-renowned Michelin-star chef hailing from France.
“The culinary team that has had the opportunity to work with these amazing master chefs have told me that they’ve learned more in a week, that they probably won’t even be able to learn everything else in the rest of their career,” said Mofford. “We’re are so incredibly pleased and just to see the turnout and to hear the comments every night, it’s just really warmed my heart to know that we’ve done something really great for the island.”

TIGER Woods won't be the biggest star in Sydney this November – the legendary US basketballer Michael Jordan will visit the Harbour City as well.
Woods and Jordan are both on the way to the Presidents Cup golf tournament in Melbourne and while the golfer will be competing at the Australian Open at The Lakes, Jordan will well and truly be on holidays here in Sydney.
"I’ve never been (to Australia). I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve heard great things about it and I’ve heard there are unbelievable sights there," Jordan, the US Presidents Cup team assistant captain, said.
"I’m going to Sydney first, then just hop around a little bit and come on down to Melbourne. I’ve heard Sydney will blow me away visually.
"I’m gonna take a cruise around Sydney with the Gatorade people who I represent and just spend time with them and they can show me the ropes.
"I don’t have appearances other than what I’m doing for the Presidents Cup. I can’t wait – I’m really looking forward to it."
Jordan, who ranks among the top athletes the world has ever seen, is a close friend US Presidents Cup captain Fred Couples.
"I was really happy that Freddie asked me to come because I have been looking for the right reason to come and spend some time," he said.
