Cruise raises Hollywood height issues

GILES HARDIE

If you want to know how tall your favourite Hollywood action star is, Google him (or her). Don’t like the answer? Google again.

it seems that for every big name actor there are a number of numbers floating around to indicate just how big they are.

Sylvester Stallone is 5′ 10″ (178 centimetres), or is it 5′ 9″? (Or, whisper it, 5′ 7″?) Arnold Schwarzenegger is 6′ 2″, according to Arnold Schwarzenegger, but 6′ 1″ or 6′ 0″ on various websites and US Weekly tried to claim he was actually 5′ 10″ in 2002.

Brad Pitt has ranged from 5′ 10″ to 6′ 1″, Zac Efron is 5′ 7″ plus or minus an inch, Leonardo DiCaprio is 6′ 1″ … or possibly not.

for an industry near-obsessed with image, one of the basic, legitimate measures of it is more obscured than ever before. why? because on set, it doesn’t matter. off set, it makes all the difference.

In fact, on set a diminutive lead actor can be a blessing, as lead actresses are prone to be truly tiny. In real life though, “petite” is fine as an adjective for women only.

As far as the end product is concerned, in the modern cinema landscape, height just doesn’t factor in. Chris Evans is neither a 5′ 0″ weakling nor a 6′ 6″ adonis prone to leaping off six-story tanks. He’s 6′ 0″ (or 5′ 11″), yet he was convincing as both in Captain America.

Aussie Chris Hemsworth is genuinely big, 6′ 3″ to 4″, yet in Thor he loomed at least a foot or more above the other mere mortals of Earth.

Height doesn’t matter in the digital age. Suspension of disbelief does. It’s all fine as long as the audience will believe the actor is as tall as the character is meant to be.

the online backlash to the announcement of Tom Crusie as Jack Reacher in one Shot, the first adaptation of Lee Child’s blockbuster novel series, has been overwhelmingly dedicated to the fact that Reacher – who is fictional and thus of specific height – is 6′ 5″ and Tom Cruise is decidedly … not.

clearly the filmmakers are confident that somewhere between a cheap wooden soap box and a multi-million-dollar digital effects budget they can overcome any practical difficulties brought about by Cruise’s stature. But can the publicists? the fans are frothing with short-man syndrome.

the obsession with height is relatively new. Alan Ladd, who played Shane in the movie of the same name, was a mere 5′ 5″ but you wouldn’t know it from watching his films. Even when Cruise shot to fame in films such as Risky Business and Top Gun, the camera was careful placed to make sure neither Rebecca De Mornay nor Kelly McGillis loomed over him, even if Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards occasionally did.

With the advent of the internet though, basic forms in which actors filled in their basic details years ago are becoming as shameful as the nude photo shoots starlets seem to be eerily attracted to before they make it.

one website, www.celebheights.com – with the mantra “In the land of Hollywood Pygmies, the elevator-shoed Dwarf is King” and run by a Glaswegian with his tongue firmly wedged in his cheek – is devoted to finding, comparing and then hopefully user-checking the various heights of the rich and famous.

the site has no final answer on how tall Tom Cruise is, citing various 5′ 7″ and 5′ 9″ answers, though it does have one quote from Billy Connolly stating Cruise is at least 5′ 10″ and that he’s a “Smashing guy. Everybody thinks he’s a small guy. He’s not. I think they would like him to be wee. I think they’re jealous b…ards.”

Cruise is not the first action star to come under height scrutiny. Sylvester Stallone was long suspected to be shorter than his official height by many, including Oscar-winning screenwriter William Goldman.

In his 2000 book, which Lie did I Tell? More Adventures in the Screen Trade, the writer of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the Princess Bride admits, “I am hopelessly smitten with finding out the truth about how tall performers are”.

“Most movie stars are short. (I’m six-one, and the only major stars who are taller that I have met are [Clint] Eastwood and [Sean] Connery)” he reveals. “Stars’ stumpiness is the beginning of my obsession. But when you throw action stars into the blend, guys who slay legions, well, it’s just too yummy for me to resist.”

Goldman enjoys debunking star’s height myths because “stars have lifts in their boots – why else, pray tell, do you think they wear them all the time? They have lifts in their shoes, their loafers, their slippers. I know one who has lifts in his socks.”

so when he heard that Stallone was in the pool at a hotel Goldman was staying in, the temptation to find the truth was overwhelming. Based on a scientific test involving simultaneous towelling, Goldman states unequivocally that Stallone is “sixty-seven inches [5' 7"], dripping wet”.

which proves either actors shrink in the water, or a 5′ 7″ Tom Cruise may just be able to stretch to Jack Reacher.

MICEBTN – P&O, Cunard highlight Australasian cruising

The 3100-passenger P&O Cruises ship Azura will visit Australia in 2013 as part of what is claimed to be the biggest world cruise program ever launched.

at 115,000 tonnes, the 290-metre long Azura will be one of the largest ships ever to visit Australia. It sits too high in the water to fit under the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Announcing details of the 2013 world program, P&O Cruises managing director Carol Marlow said the cruise line would enjoy a ‘triple A’ summer in Australia, with three of the four world cruise ships – Azura, Aurora and Arcadia – collectively making 11 calls to Australian ports during February and March 2013.

also joining the extended P&O fleet in Australia in 2013 is Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, which will sail from Sydney on a historic 12-night Royal Circumnavigation of New Zealand in March 2013.

Cunard says the roundtrip New Zealand voyage – a first for Cunard – is testament to the growing popularity of cruising in Australia and New Zealand.

The special itinerary is a highlight of the cruise line’s new 2013 world voyage program which features three Queens, with both Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria visiting Australia.

Organic success online with Google and WordPress

We all want to be successful online and there is no shortage of companies offering you a quick way to get to the top of Google results. However the majority of these companies are useless and even if you have short term success with them you will need to continually pay them to keep those results.

Another problem with these businesses is that they are flouting Google’s rules and as many have recently discovered, Google is on the lookout for them! Google adds over 500 new rules to their search algorithm each year (so stay away from anyone who pretends to have worked it out) and the recent update dumped so many of these companies down the order. So my advice is to ignore them entirely and save your money.

So how do you become a success online with Google?

Simple, write effective unique content regularly targeting your audience and the location with which they operate – the more specific the better! If you are a local business write locally, mention places and local business names, invite others to write for you as well – ones that can compliment your offering. WordPress allows for multiple authors with multiple levels of permissions!

Being Effective

How do you do this effectively? you set aside time each week to write articles and post them regularly. Set aside a few hours on a specific day each week and take no calls or appointments during this time without any reasonable exceptions.

Regular Complaints and Excuses

If a client complains to me about their search results, I immediately look at their website and see how often they write articles. I can bet you my last dollar that they would have neglected this and to them I feel no pity and only offer them the advice I am offering you here.

Another regular excuse is not having the time. WordPress allows you to write from anywhere on any device including your mobile phone, so there is always a time where you can write an article an post it live. As an example I am sitting here on my laptop in a park waiting for a friend (who is usually late) so I just thought about writing this little article.

WordPressCMS

WordPress is the perfect tool for a successful online business, be it in services or to a lesser extent (not for long) with products. WordPress allow you to easily write news articles just like this one from any location where you have a connected device, WordPress is available through your browser on your Desktop, Laptop and has apps for your iPad or Mobile iPhone, Android and Blackberry.

You can write today and schedule articles to go up at different times, you can add audio, files, video, images and links quickly and easily.

So there is no excuse with a good clean supported WordPress website. There are plenty of resources online to learn and also a number of WordPress books on Amazon – although with WordPress these books quickly become out of date as the software is updated regularly.

See your other question, all information there.

The chief engineers name was John Bradfield. He did the first design and also the formal designs for construction.

Have a look at wikipedia, it's got a good page on the Bridge & it's histroy etc.

I couldn't tell you who designed it, but 2 years before it was actually built, I had a dream about it. I saw sticks and wind sails on a bay. I was only a child!

What objects can I see from Sydney, Australia?

What stars, planets, constellations, meteors etc is visible from Sydney, with or without a telescope, during this time of year?

Im planning to purchase a telescope within a month. is there any sites to show what's up above Australia atm?

anything visible in southern hemosphere?

Buy a planisphere. It is a star map which shows you what you can see at a given time. You might want to buy the one for the Southern Hemisphere. or else, you can google for Star Maps and you should be able to find plenty of free ones.

Purchasing a sky atlas will also help you. You can buy software like Starry Night. if you are buying a telescope you may get a free student edition or basic edition copy with it

Try Heavens above for things to see right now

You will need to log on but that is easily done. You will need the latitude and longitude so it can pinpoint your location and give you precise times for viewing various ogjects.
Sydney city is 33.86S 151.21E. Western Sydney (Richmond) is 33.60S 150.78E
