Oprah Winfrey finds half-sister she didn’t know she had
Posted by Malcolm in Uncategorized on February 1, 2011
CHICAGO — Oprah Winfrey has discovered she has a half-sister — a Milwaukee woman who was given up for adoption by Winfrey’s mother nearly 50 years ago, when the talk show host was eight years old.
An emotional Winfrey introduced her newly found sibling to viewers Monday and explained the woman’s persistent quest to find her birth mother.
“This, my friends, is the miracle of all miracles,” Winfrey said before bringing out the 48-year-old woman, who throughout the program was identified only as Patricia, with no mention of her occupation or any other details.
After years of searching for blood relatives, the woman met Winfrey on Thanksgiving Day of last year.
When Patricia was born in Milwaukee in 1963, the young Winfrey was living with her father and did not even know her mother was pregnant, she said.
Patricia, who Winfrey said bounced from foster home to foster home until she was adopted at age 7, had given up after previous searches for her mother. but she decided to resume looking several years ago at the insistence of her grown children.
The effort seemed to hit a dead end when a woman from the Wisconsin adoption agency called to respond to her inquiries.
“She was telling me that my birth mother had called her back, and she had made the decision at that particular time that she did not want to see me,” Patricia said.
Coincidentally, on the local news that day was a story about Winfrey’ mother, Vernita Lee, who revealed details about two of her children who had since died. Those details, Patricia said, matched information she had seen in papers about her own adoption.
Winfrey’s mother also said that one of the deceased children had been named Patricia.
“The hairs on the back of my neck stood up,” Patricia said. “Because I knew one of my siblings and I shared the same name.”
Later, she found more matching details, including the fact that Winfrey was born in 1954, the same year as the woman Patricia knew was her surviving sibling.
Patricia found the daughter of Winfrey’s dead sister in Milwaukee, and they took a DNA test that confirmed their relationship.
Lee, who recently suffered a minor stroke, said she never told Winfrey about her half-sister, “because I thought it was a terrible thing for me to do, that I had done, gave up my daughter when she was born.”
Winfrey said documents from the girl’s birth reveal that Lee gave up the baby for adoption because she did not think she could get off welfare if she kept the child.
“I made the decision to give her up because I wasn’t able to take care of her,” Lee said during a recorded interview that aired Monday. “So when I left the hospital, I told the nurse I wasn’t going to keep the baby.”
Winfrey said she was particularly stunned by the news because of the way it came out.
She said Patricia had known since 2007 that the two were related, but never attempted to profit off her discovery, even as she tried unsuccessfully to contact Winfrey, her mother or others in Winfrey’s family.
Had Patricia sold her remarkable story to the tabloids, she would have likely received a healthy sum for the exclusive. a magazine cover story can earn as much as $75,000, and given that Patricia’s half-sister turned out to be one of the largest figures in the entertainment world and one of the wealthiest women in the United States, her theoretical payday could have been even more.
“She never once thought to sell the story,” Winfrey said, recalling how she felt betrayed by others who have sought to take advantage of their relationship with her.
Winfrey, for example, recalled how her other sister revealed to the press years ago that Winfrey had had a baby when she was a teenager. The baby, Winfrey has said, died shortly after birth. And she talked about putting her sister in rehab twice for drug addiction, but that her sister ultimately died.
Patricia said she didn’t consider revealing that she and Winfrey were half-sisters to anyone but Winfrey, explaining that she did not want to hurt Winfrey.
“Family business should be handled by family,” Patricia said. “It couldn’t be handled by anyone else. That’s not fair. It wouldn’t be fair to you.”
Winfrey said she was heartened by learning that she had a half-sister, saying it “feels like closure” for the sister who died.
“It feels to me like you are Pat on her very best day,” Winfrey told the woman. “You are what she wanted to be without the drugs.”

Coming to Sydney … Oprah Winfrey Photo: AP
There is heartbreak in Sydney today as many fans of talk-show host Oprah Winfrey find they have missed out on tickets to her exclusive Australian shows.
Winfrey will shoot two episodes at the Sydney Opera House on December 14, in what will be her final season on air.
Fans wanting tickets for themselves and a guest had to join Winfrey’s website over the weekend and then register for a ballot.
Did you get tickets? did you miss out? Message 0424 SMS SMH (+61 424 767 764) or email us or direct message us on Twitter @smh_news with information or images.
There were reports that the website initially had trouble accommodating the number of people trying to register.
It is also understood that a number of people were increasing their chances of winning tickets by using multiple email addresses to enter the ballot.
Registration closed yesterday afternoon, but rejection emails have already started filtering through to ticket hopefuls.
“Thank you for your interest in attending the Oprah show from Sydney, Australia,” the rejection email says.
“Unfortunately, we were unable to accommodate your request(s) for this ticket reservation window due to overwhelming demand. we will email you if more tickets become available for these tapings of The Oprah Show in Sydney, Australia.”
Fans have taken to Twitter to express their disappointment.
“Missed out on Oprah tickets. Not sure how I can be expected to live my best life when this sort of thing keeps happening,” @Alex-Carlton wrote this morning.
@sarahrlink wrote: “Didn’t score tickets to @Oprah in Australia. Disappointed isn’t even close.”
A few lucky people told of their glee after receiving tickets this morning.
“What up Oprah?!” I got tickets!!!!!!,” @beccaparamore tweeted.
Self-confessed Oprah fanatic Rene Thompson was lucky enough to score tickets.
The Currans Hill resident said attending the show would “be better than Christmas” and would rate in the top 10 days of her life.
“I’m a huge fan, just huge,” mrs Thompson said.
“I have been following Oprah since the beginning. I first subscribed to her website when it was launched. I tape the show every day. I subscribe to the Oprah magazine, am a member of the book club, I just love her.
“I had a funny feeling I was so going to get tickets … as I thought that it might help that I’ve been a member [of Winfrey’s website] for such a long time.”
Once the email arrived confirming her tickets, she immediately told her husband, who will attend the show as her guest.
“When I found out, I ran to my husband singing, ‘I got Oprah tickets.’
“I actually said to my sister that you have to wear a hat and wear bright colours [to the show], so it is a perfect excuse to go shopping.”
Samantha Bonnici from Mount Barker, South Australia, also missed out on tickets.
She claims it is unfair that US residents were also able to register for the Australian shows.
“What I think sucks is that it was open to the rest of the world. why was it not just for Australians at least, as most of us could never travel to the US to see Oprah,” she said.
“I had seen the ticket forum type site and Americans were getting tickets and posting how they are not sure how to get flights to Australia.”
Call for comment on the ticketing process have been left with Channel ten.
It is unclear how many tickets were available and how many people applied for tickets.

The Sydney Pulse: Oprah day in Sydney

Thousands of eager Oprah Winfrey fans have descended on the Sydney Opera House forecourt ahead of the taping of two special shows by the American talk show queen.Twelve-thousand lucky audience members were chosen by a lottery to attend the shows featuring US musicians Bon Jovi and Jay-Z, as well as Australian stars Hugh Jackman, Nicole Kidman and Olivia Newton-John.
Yesterday was a high point for Winfrey and her 302 audience members who have travelled from the US to take part in her “Ultimate Australian Adventure”.The episodes will wrap up Winfrey’s 25th and final season on air and are expected to be broadcast in 145 countries.
Taping of Oprah Winfrey’s afternoon show at the Sydney Opera House was briefly suspended when Australian actor Hugh Jackman injured himself during a stunt.
Jackman, who portrays Wolverine in the X-Men movie series, crashed into a light as he zipped down on a flying fox from the top of the Opera House sails.
Winfrey was immediately concerned for Jackman and called for a doctor, as well as saying: “Let’s take a break and get some ice.”
Winfrey also welcomed Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban , U2 frontman Bono, Olivia Newton-John to the stage for interview.
Russell Crowe then joined Jackman, Urban, Kidman and Newton-John on stage, closing the show in spectacular style with a rendition of I Still Call Australia Home backed by the Gondwana children’s choir as a massive Australian flag moved over the crowd.
Meanwhile, Winfrey showed she was still in a giving mood by announcing she would be giving diamond necklaces to all 6,000 members of her audience, prompting hysterical scenes.
Earlier, Winfrey told a press conference she had been promised a trip to Australia for her 50th birthday by her partner, Stedman Graham.
“Australia was an ultimate destination for me, I always wanted to come to the country,” she said.
She says one of the things that has surprised her most about Australia is the people, which she referred to as the “open face of Australia”.
As well as Sydney, Winfrey and her entourage have criss-crossed Australia, visiting iconic tourist sites including the Great Barrier Reef, Uluru and Byron Bay.
The federal and NSW governments spent $4 million to lure Winfrey and her show to Australia in the hope of boosting the flailing tourism industry.
Meanwhile, Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson has defended the use of taxpayers’ money to help stage The Oprah Winfrey Show in Australia.
A “small investment” of $4 million to $5 million by the Federal and several state governments is money well spent, according to Mr Ferguson.
Australia had already reaped a benefit of $71 million in Australia and $14 million in the United States, he says.
Five-year wait for full Oprah benefit

IN GOOD TIME: Oprah Winfrey has a massive influence upon her viewers, but as Tourism Australia’s Andrew McEvoy was told by her production company, it’s best to take a long-term approach when it comes to seeing tangible results. Source: The Courier-Mail
AUSTRALIA'S tourism chief has conceded it could be up to five years before the full impact of Oprah Winfrey's Australian TV specials is known.
Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy said he had been warned by Winfrey’s production company, Harpo Productions, that her influence was often more long-term.
"they told me you will really understand the power of this stuff in the next five years," he said.
"she wore Ugg boots on the show seven or eight years ago and Harpo told me they continue to get people who walk in and ask for them because of Oprah.
"I think the big thing is that this won’t deliver everything in a month or six months or 12 months – it will deliver a lot in the next five years."
Despite this, early signs are encouraging, he said, with some American travel agents specialising in Australia reporting strong bookings already.
Qantas Vacations has experienced a 250 per cent rise in internet and telephone inquiries, australia.com is getting twice as many hits as usual and qantas.com is up 80 per cent.
"It’s been quite incredible," mr McEvoy said.
"Everyone’s up. Everyone’s doing better than they normally would be at this time of the year and they all credit Oprah.
"little mum-and-dad operators are saying if they used to get two bookings at this time of year, they’re now getting 14 bookings."
Mr McEvoy has been travelling throughout the United States this week to capitalise on renewed interest in Australia and attend the G’Day USA promotional events in Los Angeles.
During her December trip, Oprah and more than 300 of her fans visited the Great Barrier Reef, took a flight over the Australian Outback, visited Melbourne’s Federation Square and walked on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
State tourism bodies are working with Tourism Australia on marketing initiatives in the US and other key markets where Oprah’s show is broadcast – including the UK, new Zealand and Canada – off the back of the programs.

Oprah Winfrey Taking Things Slow With Half-Sister
Posted by Malcolm in Uncategorized on January 26, 2011
OPRAH Winfrey is taking things “slow” with her half-sister.
The 56-year-old talk show host recently discovered she had a secret sibling, Patricia, and while she is thrilled to have a new addition to her family, Oprah knows they can’t rush their relationship.
“We’re taking it slow. I think it’s about building a relationship one conversation — one experience — at a time,” Oprah said.
Oprah — who shares the same birth mother as 47-year-old Patricia, who was given up for adoption shortly after her birth because mum Vernita Lee couldn’t afford to raise her — says the pair have bonded over some issues and are enjoying each other’s company.
“I think we have the common interest of our mother. everybody who’s dealing with an ailing parent understands that process of getting care for them. and we’re speaking regularly about that,” she said.
“She coming into the family at this time has been a great peace offering, a great symbol of peace-making in this family. I would say I see her as a gift.”
Patricia discovered Oprah was her sister after she saw Vernita discussing her three other children on a TV interview in 2007 and began to work out her place in family history after her son Andre went online and found the birthdates of his mother’s siblings.

What does this quote mean????????
Posted by Malcolm in Uncategorized on January 26, 2011
This is a quote from Oprah Winfrey…
"if you come to fame not knowing who you are, it will define who you are."
I'm not sure what this means. What do you think?
It you become famous without knowing yourself, your values, morals, YOURSELF in every way, Hollywood will make you someone they want you to be, not necessarily the person you are. so basically know yourself and be true to yourself before you become famous, so that you wont become someone who Hollywood wants you to be.
I think she means that when you became famous that that wasn't your primary goal and you were focusing on something else or you weren't sure what you wanted to do in life but when you are famous and that happens you will be a better person or you'll figure out your goals. Idk, did that make sense? lol
Piers Morgan dons velvet gloves to handle Oprah Winfrey
Posted by Malcolm in Uncategorized on January 24, 2011

By David Usborne Wednesday, 19 January 2011
Piers Morgan probably did not need the admonition he got last night from the second guest on his new primetime interview show for CNN.
"I am glad you are confident," Howard Stern, the veteran radio shock jock, tells him, according to a promotional clip. "But, my friend, you have a lot to prove."
It would not be surprising if the former ‘Daily Mirror’ editor and reality show judge is quivering a little this week. Reviews for his debut performance, taking on Oprah Winfrey on Monday, were rather ho-hum.
Things were not made easier by CNN itself, which had so relentlessly promoted his debut in recent weeks. Struggling against its main competitors in the US — Fox News and MSNBC — the network has a great deal riding on the English import they chose to replace Larry King, who held the same slot for decades.
"I am a perfectly badly adjusted British guy," Morgan said to an emotional Winfrey on Monday during a brief discussion about how much therapy each of them had undergone over the years. (Neither has had any.)
That he means to play up his Britishness in his new job is fairly obvious. He likened Winfrey to the Queen and said her boyfriend of many years, Stedman Graham, reminded him of the Duke of Edinburgh.
More importantly, Morgan, with his flushed cheeks and eager laugh, apparently hopes to exploit those stereotypes that allegedly set the English apart from Americans, like their willingness to self-flagellate.
In general, English people think that teasing is funnier than Americans do. And as Ricky Gervais so skillfully demonstrated as host of the Golden Globes at the weekend, they think it is their civic duty to show Americans why crossing the line is a good thing.
Certainly, Morgan can do the self-deprecation part. the only question that really mattered was the last one he posed to Winfrey. Did he do okay or will he be flayed alive?
"You have been surprising," she responded before the credits began to roll. "Surprisingly bad?" Morgan asked her instantly, unabashedly flaunting his insecurity. "No, just surprising," she said. it was an enigmatic verdict, but meant as a compliment, she added.
What she probably meant was that while Morgan showed off another great British talent — blurring the line between charming and fawning — he had not been aggressive or even rude with her, which many might have expected.
This deference may work well with the traditional audience that tuned in to see King. But it is not how Morgan was sold to viewers. He said in promotional trailers that this would be the "dangerous" interview programme where anything would happen. But Morgan the tiger was notably absent with Winfrey as they both purred loudly.
Thus no check was put on the flow of philosophical syrup from Winfrey, who is also launching her own television network, OWN, this month.
Her brand is love, she repeated many times, and she wanted all of us to understand the journey that has taken her to this point and how happy it makes her. "I am profoundly rewarded by this blessing of an experience that I get to have a platform, whether it’s ‘The Oprah Winfrey Show’ or the network we have now created," she said.
"anyone who gets to live their lives on purpose and in alignment with why they really came to the planet to fulfil the great mission for themselves, you just can’t ask for better than that." OWN, she added, is "my supreme moment of destiny".
Morgan, it seemed, had jettisoned his gag reflex somewhere over the Atlantic, not blinking even when Winfrey explained that "it’s all about opening your heart space so you can love more".
And while he had clearly done his research — thus putting himself on a higher plane journalistically from that of his predecessor — he seemed unable to go beyond being impressed by Winfrey and grateful she had agreed to the interview.
Possibly, it was not smart of him to highlight a moment from an interview she gave last month to Barbara Walters on rival network ABC when asked about rumours about her relationship with her friend Gayle King. He even showed a clip. look! that was the Winfrey interview you should have watched. (? Independent News Service)
