Virgin Australia says first-quarter profit to rise

SYDNEY (MarketWatch) — Virgin Australia Ltd. on Wednesday flagged higher first quarter pre-tax profits and said it still expects a better performance this year, but stopped short of providing specific guidance due to economic uncertainty.

Australia’s second biggest carrier behind Qantas Airways Ltd. (QAN.AU) said it’s “encouraged” by its performance in the early stages of the year to June 30, 2012.

“Underlying profit before tax for the first quarter of financial year 2012 was higher than the corresponding period last year, despite an increase in fuel costs,” Chief Executive John Borghetti told the group’s annual shareholder meeting in Brisbane.

“While we continue to expect an improvement in underlying performance for this financial year, we are unable to provide clear guidance due to the uncertain economic environment,” he said.

the airline last year reported a 67.8 million Australian dollars (US$66.5 million) annual net loss and pre-tax loss of A$66.6 million.
